Reflection on Psalm 19:9-10
“The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.” (Psalm 19:9-10, NIV)

“The fear of the Lord” here refers to reverence and awe inspired by God’s Word. It is described as “pure, enduring forever,” underscoring that God’s truth remains unchanging and eternal. Walter Brueggemann comments, “The fear evoked by God’s Word is not terror, but a deep sense of awe that leads to faithful living.” Unlike the fleeting nature of human wisdom, God’s Word stands firm through every generation, guiding us in righteousness.
The Decrees of the Lord: Firm and Righteous
David declares that God’s decrees are “firm” and “righteous.” They are unshakable and reliable, a foundation upon which we can build our lives. Eugene Peterson paraphrases it as, “God’s Word is rock-solid, always right, always on target.” In a world filled with shifting values and uncertainty, Scripture remains a steadfast guide.
More Precious than Gold, Sweeter than Honey
David compares God’s Word to the finest treasures of his time—gold and honey. Charles Spurgeon writes, “There is not only value in God’s Word but delight, for it is richer than gold and sweeter than honey to the soul.” Gold represents wealth, yet even much fine gold cannot compare to the eternal riches found in God’s truth. Honey symbolizes pleasure, yet the sweetness of God’s Word brings a deeper, more lasting satisfaction.
