Soul Satisfaction in God

“I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;

with singing lips my mouth will praise you.”

Psalm 63:5

Our souls hunger just as our bodies do. But too often, we feed them with things that never truly satisfy—success, possessions, approval, distractions. The prophet Isaiah asks, “Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?” (Isaiah 55:2). Jesus answers that longing, declaring, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry” (John 6:35).

David understood this well. Though physically in a barren wilderness, his soul was feasting. He writes, “I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods.” Not because his circumstances were easy, but because his heart was filled with God.

Matthew Henry observed, “The gracious soul is satisfied in communion with God, as in a spiritual feast.” This satisfaction doesn’t come from material abundance—it comes from deep fellowship with the Lord.

Charles Spurgeon echoes this, saying, “No delicacies of the royal table could rival the satisfying power of communion with God.” True satisfaction is not about what we have, but whom we worship.

Walter Brueggemann adds, “Praise itself becomes nourishment. The act of worship replenishes the soul where nothing else can.” When we worship, our emptiness is filled not with things, but with God Himself.

Prayer:

Lord, I hunger for what only You can give. Feed my soul with your presence, and let my lips overflow with praise. May I be satisfied in You today, and always. Amen.
