Clinging and Carried

Psalm 63:8 – “I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.”

There are seasons when holding on to God feels like our only strength—and that’s exactly where David finds himself in Psalm 63. In the wilderness, far from safety and sanctuary, he utters this deeply personal confession: “I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.”

This is more than poetic language—it’s a declaration of dependence. Deuteronomy 10:20 instructs, “Hold fast to him.” And Isaiah 41:10 assures us, “I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Scripture invites us to both cling and trust we’re being held.

Donald Coggan writes, “The language here is of complete attachment—nothing else is stable but the hand of God.” In a world of shifting sands and uncertain outcomes, God alone is unshakeable. David clings not out of desperation, but out of devotion—he knows where strength is found.

Matthew Henry affirms, “He who cleaves to God shall find that God’s hand never lets go.” Our grip may falter in fear or weariness, but God’s hand is steadfast and sure.

Spurgeon paints a tender picture: “Cling as a child to a parent. If we hold fast to God, it is because His hand holds us fast first.” Even our ability to cling is a gift of grace.

Prayer:

Lord, I cling to You today—not because I am strong, but because You are faithful. Uphold me with Your right hand. When I feel weak, help me rest in the strength of Your everlasting arms. Amen.
